Day 11: Mady's Haircut

Mady's hair is longer than it has been in years, but we know that the chemotherapy will cause it to start to fall out soon. Hair can be pretty important to 13-year-old girls, but she doesn't talk about it much.

She decides that short hair falling out won't be nearly as bad as really long hair falling out. Friends who have been through chemo-induced hair loss think that this is a really good idea. She wants it short, but not a buzz-cut... yet.

The new Mady! She washed it, and said that she didn't even need to use conditioner to get the tangles out...

And she has a 12" braid to send to Locks for Love.

Looks great! You actually look very teen-ager-y Mady, if that's a real word. I love the wall behind you too, I suspect some of those babies on the wall are you??.... Maybe you can convince your parents to show us the room and view sometime.

The new haircut looks great, Mady. It's so wonderful that one of the first things you thought of was to donate your hair. You have a great smile, too, that matches your hair & glasses just perfectly.

Hi Mady-I have lost my hair as well. It does grow back quickly and there are great wigs for sale. I actually like my wig better than my hair-it is much more manageable and it is straight! i hope my new hair comes in straight, too! I do have a lot of gray, though. Oh well, that is minor. I have the picture of you, that your mom painted at the beach, right next to me on my desk-when I look at it-I say my favorite prayer which is St. Jude. I say it all day long!

You are so strong and brave to go through all you have been through.
You have great parents and family who love you and are going to do everything they can. Keep swinging, Mady.

Say a big Hello to Mom and Dad and let them know I would love to see you all, when you are ready.

take care, be nice to the nurses!!
Lots of Love & St.Judes-andrea cady

You look great, Mady! And it's so cool that you're giving to Locks of Love. I did that a couple years ago. But I can't remember how long mine was...ah well, all is great when you donate hair. For a split second I was thinking hair and great rhymed. I suppose they don't, but for you Mady, the words will bend and you will see that the words will rhyme just for you.
Okay, see you soon!

I agree with all of the above that Mady looks FANTABULOUS with her new haircut.

And I think it's cool that she donated to Locks for Love, because that's kind of like donating to herself...

Except not.

Anyway, I will be visiting this weekend. I meant to visit this week, but I had stupid extracurricular crap. So yes, look forward to seeing me soon.

Mady: It's the Chaneys from San Francisco checking in. LOVE the hair. I just cut mine off about 3 months ago for Locks for Love, too. My hair is about your length (I went shorter to get 11 inches). But, more importantly, COOL glasses!!! So, I work in a Children's Hospital, and this is what I think you should do for all of those icky shots. For every shot or procedure that you have to endure, collect 1 bead to make a necklace, belt, earrings, etc. Maybe 2 beads for the ones that REALLY hurt. I'll send you a bunch of really pretty beads this weekend, and you can get started. It's kind of fun to see the different designs that you can come up with. And, it helps a little to focus on something fun while you're doing something not so fun. Also, I think that you are so pretty that you should just go ahead and shave your head now. Matt will do it with you. Oh, wait, Matt already does!! Take care and be strong.
Love, Liz, Matt, Dylan & Brian
